Glen Joris is a senior researcher at the research group for Media, Innovation and Communication Technologies (imec-mict-UGent). He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Management (AP Hogeschool, 2014), a Master’s degree in Communication Sciences (University of Antwerp, 2016) and a doctoral degree in Communication Sciences (Ghent University, 2021).

He joined imec-mict-UGent in March 2017. In his first research project he investigated and explored the use of new information technologies to enhance privacy and data management practices. During this period, he also published his master thesis on ad avoidance and ad blockers.

Since March 2018, Glen works full time on NewsDNA, an interdisciplinary four-year research project (2018-2022) in which the primary aim is to develop and test a news algorithm that uses news diversity as a key driver for personalized news recommendation. In this project, he explored the conceptual meaning of news diversity by conducting a systematic literature review. Next, he launched a large-scale survey in Ghent to identify different types of news behavior and preferences. In 2020-2022, he tested causally whether a diverse news algorithms makes news consumption more diverse and citizens better informed.
